Big Bend National Park features majestic mountain vistas, as well as tranquil desert beauty. Many diverse species of wildlife, some of which are found nowhere else, make their home in this 801,000-acre park.
There are more than 200 miles of trails, some suitable for short day hikes and others for overnight backpacking trips. There are three developed campgrounds and numerous primitive backcountry campsites. A permit is required for backcountry camping.
The Rio Grande forms the park's southern boundary and has carved sheer-walled canyons. Experienced rafters and canoeists can embark on river trips through the canyons; permits are required. Commercial float trips are available from outfitters based just outside the park.
