The Daniel Boone National Forest, established in 1937, covers more than 707,000 acres of eastern Kentucky, including portions of 21 counties. Laurel River Lake, Cave Run Lake and the Red River Gorge are some of the outstanding sites. There are plenty of opportunities for camping, picnicking, hiking, hunting, swimming and nature study. The 269-mile Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail extends the length of the forest and links many of its more developed recreation areas. The forest contains hundreds of 100 natural arches carved by wind and water. Wheelchair-accessible campsites exist at some campgrounds. While entry to the forest is free, some areas charge for camping and other use. Photo credits in order: Courtesy of Daniel Boone National Forest. Courtesy of Daniel Boone National Forest. |
