The Eldorado National Forest offers a broad range of recreation opportunities for adventurous visitors. From remote backpacking trails in Desolation or Mokelumne Wildernesses to beautiful scenic drives on the Highway 88 scenic byway, an adventure awaits all visitors. Fishing opportunities are abundant on 620 miles of fishable streams and rivers. With 11 large reservoirs and numerous small lakes, water-related recreation such as boating, sailing, and fishing abound. The forest has more than 60 campgrounds and picnic areas to choose from. Winter sports enthusiasts enjoy snowmobiling, snowshoeing, downhill, crosscountry, or backcountry skiing. Backcountry exploration in Desolation and Mokelumne Wilderness areas is very popular. Permits are required, so check with the local offices for the details. Portions of the Pony Express and Pacific Crest trails cross the forest. Rental cabins, some with gorgeous views of the Crystal Range of the Sierra Nevada, are available. Loon Lake Chalet, Robbs Hut, Van Vleck Bunkhouse, and the Harvey West Cabin can be rented through the National Recreation Reservation Service.
