Buffalo Gap is the region's largest national grassland.

Encompassing more than 591,000 acres in southwest South Dakota, Buffalo Gap is the region's largest national grassland.

It is home to many varieties of plants and wildlife especially adapted to the prairie ecosystem. The Buffalo Gap is a reintroduction site for the endangered black-footed ferret.

The grassland is divided into two distinct districts, separated by the Cheyenne River. The western district is administered by the Hot Springs office and eastern half is administered by the Wall Ranger District in the town of Wall.
