Bruce Peninsula National Park

Bruce Peninsula is home to the massive Niagara Escarpment, declared a World Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizaiton.

The massive escarpment begins in Tobermory and winds south to Niagara Falls.

The park, near the top of the Bruce Peninsula, preserves the core of the biosphere reserve. The park is just a few hours drive from Toronto and offers a variety of year-round activities.

A surprise attraction of the park is its profusion of orchid species. There are more than 60 orchid species in Ontario and approximately 43 are found on the Bruce Peninsula.

Wildlife includes chipmunk, squirrel, raccoon, porcupine, snowshoe hare, skunk, white-tailed deer, snakes and frogs. Black bear, fox, fisher, marten and the Massasauga rattlesnake are present but not commonly seen.

You can hike throughout the park and swim at several locations. Tented campsites are available at Cyprus Lake campground and backcountry camping is also permitted.

Interpretive programs are offered in July and August, including guided walks and naturalist programs for children.

Winter activities include cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. While there are no groomed trails, you can follow marked routes within the park to the Georgian Bay and Lake Huron shorelines.

The village of Tobermory, seven miles northwest of Cyprus Lake, has medical services, stores, private campgrounds, lodgings, and groceries.

The park is accessible from the south along Hwy. 6 or from the north via Ontario Northland Ferry M.S.

A Visitor Centre for Bruce Peninsula National Park and Fathom Five National Marine Park has opened in Tobermory.
