Purnululu National Park, in western Australia 69 miles north of Halls Creek, is the home of the Bungle Bungle Range, a fascinating geological landmark. Purnululu, which means sandstone in the Kija Aboriginal language, is open from April to September. The park is accessed by air or four-wheel-drive vehicle. From the air, the sight of the orange and black stripes across the beehive-like mounds is spectacular. The Bungle Bungles are about 1,927 feet above sea level at their highest point and rise 667 to 1,000 feet above the surrounding terrain. Purnululu is remote wilderness. There are no accommodations and few facilities. Visitors must bring their own food and water. Camping is available. Other attractions of the park include Aboriginal art, more than 130 species of birds, wallabies and euros. Activities include hiking, photography and scenic flights over the massif. There is a ranger stationed in the park who gives talks most evenings.
