A stream in Mount Carleton Discovery Site.

Located in the north central area of New Brunswick, Mount Carleton is the highest mountain peak in the Canadian Maritimes at 2,690 feet. It has a commanding view of the Appalachian Range Discovery Site.

The headwaters of both the Tobique and the Nepisiguit rivers are within the Mount Carleton Provincial Park. The rivers meander through a dazzling landscape.

Canoe the Tobique’s green waters that flow through hills of red gypsum, or the Nepisiguit, which runs wide and deep and gives way to Indian Falls, a stretch of white water.

Cast a line for the river's famous Atlantic salmon and trout, which spawn in abundance.

The park is the perfect setting for nature lovers and birding. Wildlife such as white-tailed deer, moose and black bear make their home here.

There are four mountains that have hiking trails: Mount Carleton, Mount Bailey, Mount Sagamook and Mount Head. If you hike to the summit of Mount Carleton keep an eye out for Bicknell's thrush, which makes its habitat near the summit.

There is much to explore in the park, including 10 hiking trails, mountains, valleys, lakes and rivers.

The park is off Route 385 from Plaster Rock or Route 180 from St. Quentin or Bathurst. Check road conditions before traveling in winter.
