Entry Fee Charged
More than 80 percent of Kejimkujik is remote backcountry terrain, accessible only by canoe or hiking trails. There are many historic canoe routes, portages and beautiful hiking trails in the park. The inland portion of the park is dominated by lakes and forested hills. Park staff offer guided walks, canoe trips and children's programs. Self-guided trails lead to an old gold mine, a waterfall and a grove of 300 year-old hemlock trees. The woodlands are home to a variety of wildlife. You may see white-tailed deer, beaver, coyote and black bear. There are approximately 205 bird species found within Kejimkujik. The park also has more amphibians and reptiles than elsewhere in Atlantic Canada, including the Blanding's turtle, an endangered species in Nova Scotia, and the ribbon snake, which is threatened in Nova Scotia. You may see many frogs and painted and snapping turtles while canoeing. An observation tower on the main park road overlooks Kejimkujik Lake and signs explain the glacial features of the landscape. There are several campgrounds throughout the park. Backcountry campers must register at the Visitor Reception Centre. Call for reservations. Many services and lodging are available at towns within 10 miles of the park. The park also has a Seaside Adjunct, an area of 8.5 square miles that includes some rugged coastline. This section of the park is remote. While there is a trail with interpretive signs, washrooms, parking lot and picnic site, there is no camping or services in the Seaside Adjunct wilderness area. An entry fee is charged from early-May to mid-October. Photo credits in order: Photo by Peter Hope, courtesy of Kejimkujik National Park. Photo by Peter Hope, courtesy of Kejimkujik National Park. |
