A lake in Hokkaido.

Akan National Park in the eastern region of Hokkaido is known for its crater lakes formed when the calderas of volcanic Akan, Kussharo and Mashu filled with water.

This park has abundant forests, mountains, lakes and thermal springs. Lake Kussharo, the largest lake, is a popular destination for camping and boating.

Located in the western part of the park, Lake Akan is surrounded by two active volcanoes. It is one of the few places to see the extremely rare, round green weed called marimo. The local government created a Marimo Exhibition and Observation Center in 1996, to promote the environmental and scientific importance of marimo and research the protection and propagation of the species.

There is also a three-day Marimo Festival each October.

In winter, you can ice fish in the park for wakasagi (smelt). You can also skate and cross-country ski.

Bihoro Pass and Lake Mashu offer splendid views.

Kawayu, Teshikaga and the shores of Lake Akan have hot spring resorts that are best visited from early summer to autumn.

There are various types of accommodation available.
