Ohiopyle State Park is the gateway to the Laurel Mountains and encompasses over 19,000 acres of rugged wilderness. The focal point of the park is the 14-mile long Youghiogheny River Gorge, which provides some of the best whitewater rafting and kayaking in the East. Ohiopyle is an Native American word meaning white, frothy water. Ohiopyle Falls is the day-use area, with parking and scenic overlooks of the falls. The lower river contains Class III and IV rapids. The middle section of the river offers Class I and II rapids. There are guided river tours on the lower section, with canoe and raft rentals available for the calmer middle section. Bicyclists and hikers share 27 miles of rails-to-trails paths along the river and past waterfalls. A dedicated mountain bike trail is 13.2 miles long. Horseback riders can explore over nine miles of trails. The park has a 226-site campground with platform tents and camping cottages. If you're up for a short hike from your car, 27 sites offer more privacy. Reservations are recommended.
