The Chapada Diamantina National Park is a fine example of a savanna ecosystem. Situated in the State of Bahia near the Brazilian coastline, the park is a region of high plains surrounded by mountains. The park has fields, rocky areas, forests and copses that make it a paradise for walkers and nature lovers. The name Chapada da Diamantina means rocky plateau and refers to the rocky formations in the highlands where diamonds were mined in the early 1800s. The area's two most impressive sites are the Cachoeira da Fumaça, a 1,320-foot-high waterfall, and the Encantadola lake that is within a cave.
