Serra da Capivara National Park's numerous rock shelters are decorated with cave paintings, some more than 25,000 years old.

The paintings were created by one of the oldest human communities in South America and survive at more than 360 sites throughout the national park.

The area has been inhabited continuously for more than 50,000 years. The narrative paintings are particularly interesting because they represent scenes from daily life and from ancient ceremonies.

The Serra da Capivara National Park is on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's World Heritage List.

The park is also unique for its rich ecosystem of caatinga. Caatinga is a type of vegetation found mainly in the Brazilian northeast in areas with a semi-arid climate and irregular rains.
