From oak and pine forests to freshwater marsh, from tidal flat to barrier beach, Nickerson State Park runs the gamut of Cape Cod ecosystems. That diversity makes the 1,900-acre park attractive to nature lovers and recreation enthusiasts alike. The park has access to both fresh water and salt, though parking in a town-owned lot is very limited. There are five ponds, a 10 hp engine limit is in place on two of them, and electric motors are permitted on the other three. Trout and salmon are stocked and there are resident populations of perch and bass. The park's eight miles of bikeways cover hilly, curvy terrain, and the park connects to the renowned 25-mile Cape Cod Rail Trail, a converted railway roadbed. For hikers, there are six miles of easy-to-intermediate trails. Snow cover varies widely from year to year, but the park is popular with cross-country skiers. Many campers on the Cape are drawn to Nickerson's forested terrain and its 420 campsites. The park offers six yurt-style (dome tents) that are completely wheelchair-accessible and have electric hook-ups. You must make camping reservations six months in advance of your arrival date.
