Golden langurs, the rarest monkey in the world, can be found only in a small patch of forest along the Manas River, which forms the border between the Manas National Park in India and the Royal Manas National Park in Bhutan.

The parks are in the foothills of the Himalayas, where wooded hills give way to riverside grasslands and tropical forests.

The area is home to a great variety of wildlife, including many endangered species including tiger, pygmy hog, red panda and Indian rhinoceros and elephant.

Other animals include panther, clouded leopard, marbal cat, swamp deer, barking deer, dhole (wild dog), otter, bison and buffalo.

Manas has the largest population of tigers of all the Indian tiger reserves. Birds found in the park include mergansers, brahminy ducks and a range of egrets.

The national park is 25 miles from the nearest town off Barapeta Road.

The park can be entered on elephant back, in a four-wheel drive vehicle or by car.

The park is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization World Heritage Site.
