Sangay National Park preserves one of the most remote areas in Ecuador. Within its boundaries are three of the country’s highest peaks. Tungurahua volcano is located in the northern part, El Altar and Sangay peaks are in the south. Mountaineering on the peaks of Tungurahua, El Altar, Cubillin, Quilimas and Sangay is one of the park's main attractions. Located 43 miles from Baños, the park is home to animals such as tapirs, ocelots, pumas and porcupines. Vegetation includes highland grasses and shrubs, with cloud forest at the lower elevations. Park facilities include lodging, hot springs and trails. There is a road leading to the park from Riobamba to Aloa. There is a tourist information center in Macas. Park tours can also be arranged in Baños.
