Barra Honda Park has at least 42 caves, and only 19 have been explored to date.

The most spectacular caves are Terciopelo, La Trampa and Santa Ana, with a profusion of stalagmites, stalactites, pillars, cave pearls, chalk flowers needles and other underground formations. The deepest, Santa Ana, descends 792 feet.

Several caves are open for exploration and guides are available. (Cave exploration is only possible from December through April, during the dry season.)

In some caves you may see bats, salamanders and other underground wildlife. Other park wildlife includes white-faced capuchin monkeys, coyotes and armadillo.

The park is located in Guanacaste Province, about 12 miles northeast of Nicoya. There are three exceptionally beautiful scenic areas. On the southern rim, you enjoy a splendid partial view of the lowlands and southern part of the Nicoya Gulf. Los Mesones, is a towering evergreen forest, and La Cascada has a spectacular waterfall.

The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
