This 86,361-acre park was created as a preserve for the "alerce" (Fitzroya cupressoides), large and ancient conifers.

There are extensive groves of alerce in the park, and the trees may exceed 150 feet in height and 12 feet in diameter. Alerces more than 2,000 years old stand among cypress and incense cedar.

The park is 28 miles from the city of Puerto Montt and features pristine lakes and streams, enchanting views and excellent fishing at Futalaufquén Lake, Reloncaví Sound and several lakes and rivers.

The best way to experience the park is hiking in the backcountry along one of the many trails.

Rangers at the park station are an excellent source of information.

The park service operates campgrounds at Lago Chaiquenes and at Rio Chamiza, in the northern part of the park. Rustic refugios (shelters) are also available at Rio Pangal, Laguna Sargazo and Laguna Fria. Backcountry camping is also permitted.

The driest and warmest time to visit the park is between December and March, during the South American summer. It can be quite wet at other times.

From the park, the Pan-American Highway continues on to Chiloé, South America's second-largest island after Tierra del Fuego.
