This very developed, mountainous park in the Lake District offers excellent fishing, hiking, mountain biking and mountain climbing on 1.9 million acres.

The park, established in 1903, is named for Lago Nahuel Huapí, a 200 square-mile lake. It borders both Puyehue and Vicente Perez Rosales along the Chilean border.

The lake itself, Lago Nahuel Huapí, is 62 miles long and was sculpted by Pleistocene glaciers. Isla Victoria, the small island in its center, has rare species of trees and some exotic animals, including the pudu and the huemul, both rare indigenous deer.

The lake is home to a number of native fish species, plus trout and salmon, and is a prime sport fishing destination.

There is also excellent high country trekking through mountains and alpine meadows. Just west of the lake, near the Chilean border, is Tronador (Thunderer), a 11,722-foot extinct volcano.

You can find hotels, alpine huts, camping with facilities and backcountry camping in or near the park.
