At 1,486 feet, Piedra Volada is the highest waterfall in Mexico and is the centerpiece of Basaséachi Falls National Park in Chihuahua. There are several other waterfalls in the park. The falls are at their peak during the rainy season, from June through September, although hiking in the park can be difficult at that time. The falls are not accessible by vehicle. To reach the falls, you should expect a long hike through the rugged Sierra Tarahumara through pine and oak forests along marked trails. Among the animal species of the area are deer, pumas, wildcats, tree frogs, nutria, woodpeckers and many other birds. Besides varied hiking, there's some camping and climbing. The park covers 15,470 acres and is located 180 miles west of Chihuahua City. The closest town is the small community of Basaséachi. Photo credits in order: Courtesy of Corel. Courtesy of Corel. |
