Abaco National Park preserves 20,500 acres of southern Abaco forest land. The park's forest is the major habitat for the Abaco population of the Bahama parrot. This unique parrot nests in natural limestone cavities on the ground. This nesting habit makes the parrot vulnerable to predators, especially the wild cats of the Abaco forests. The 12 government-funded national parks of the Bahamas preserve every kind of habitat that the islands possess, from hardwood forests to sand dunes and mangrove flats. Abaco National Park is the largest. Bahamas National Trust volunteers and park rangers are available to give tours of the parks and their inhabitants.
