Nairobi National Park

Nairobi National Park is a sanctuary for black rhinos.

During the migration in July and August, zebra, wildebeest and eland enter the park.

Nairobi National Park, bordering Kenya's capital city of Nairobi, has been a unique model for other parks in Africa with a good layout and well maintained roads.

It is the oldest national park in Kenya, created in 1946. It covers an area of 45 square miles, with savanna land stretching right up to the skyline of Nairobi.

The park is a leading sanctuary for black rhinos. Unlike the seasonal migration of most animals in the park, the rhinos remain year-round. More than 50 rhinos have been moved to the park from other parts of Kenya where poaching has been rife.

During the migration in July and August, zebra, wildebeest and eland enter the park. Other wildlife includes buffalo, lion, leopard, crocodile and hippo. Nairobi park boasts more bird species than in the entire British Isles.

Scenery is magnificent along the southwest park boundary, where there is an area of steep valleys. The rains bring out a profusion of wild flowers, with yellow daisies covering the plains.

Accommodations are not offered in the park, but adjacent Nairobi has a good selection to choose from. The park has a nature trail and an education center at the main gate.
