The Djurö archipelago and its 30 islands are among the most isolated parks in Sweden. While in Sweden's interior, it is in the middle of the country's largest lake, Vänern.

Reaching the islands requires a five-mile boat trip over open water from the western shore of the mainland. The waters to the east are treacherous with sunken reefs and rocks.

The islands are mostly bedrock, with thin soil. Djurö has a population of fallow deer, a legacy of a time when the park was a hunting ground with introduced game.

Bird life is very rich, with populations of osprey, hobbies, oystercatchers and greater black-backed gulls.

The largest island had been inhabited since the 16th century, but it is now deserted. Even the lighthouse is not staffed.

Several of the islands have marked walking trails.
