Foxes are one of the animals that can be encountered in the park.

France's Western Pyrenees National Park preserves several valleys in this beautiful mountain range.

The Aure valley boasts the highest mountain pine forests in Europe. Luz-Gavarnie is surrounded by 9,843-foot summits. Cauterets Valley looks up to the highest peak in the French Pyrenees, Vignemale.

Azun Valley is dominated by Balaïtous, which rises to 10,315 feet. Ossau is home to grazing livestock. Aspe Valley, with its great forests, is a bear refuge.

The park shares a nine-mile border with the Spanish National Park of Ordesa and Monte Perdido, and the two parks have been recognized as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization World Heritage Area.

The Pyrenees form both a natural frontier with the Iberian Peninsula and a climate barrier. The oceanic influence delivers mild, damp weather to the northern, French slopes. In contrast, the southern Spanish side is hotter and drier.

Royal eagles, griffon and bearded vultures are among the notable birds found in the park. Foxes, wild boars and roe deer are a few of the mammals you may see there.

Hiking is the most popular activity in the park.
