France's first national park is perched in the high Alps, in the Savoy region. Vanoise offers an impressive diversity of plant and animal life, as well as geology.

With neighboring Gran Paradiso National Park in Italy, this region is the largest protected area in Western Europe. Mountains in the park reach up to 9,843 feet.

Chamois, ibex, marmots, and more than 100 species of birds, including golden eagles, various owls and three-toed woodpeckers, live in the park. An incredible array of alpine wild flowers is found in the region.

The best way to explore the park is on foot. A variety of hiking trails of varying degrees of difficulty run through the park, as well as two long-distance alpine trails.

Tenting is not allowed in the park, but a number of alpine huts provide lodging for those wishing to hike through.

Several ski resorts are located in the area.
