Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti ecosystem is famous for its annual wildebeest migration.

The massive herds of wildebeest in May or early June are spectacular.

Serengeti National Park is the largest park in Tanzania, covering approximately 5,700 square miles. The park extends up to the Kenyan border and nearly reaches Lake Victoria. It is 209 miles from Arusha.

Serengeti means "endless plains" and describes one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in the world. It is possible to see vast herds of antelope, columns of wildebeest and prides of lions.

Other wildlife in the park includes leopard, cheetah, hyena, giraffe, rhino, elephant and hippo. There are almost 500 species of birds. The best times to observe the birds and animals are in the early mornings and late evenings.

The Serengeti ecosystem is famous for its unique concentration of plains animals and the annual wildebeest migration. The massive conglomeration of wildebeest before their trek north in May or early June is a spectacular sight.

The wet season (December to March) is considered the best time to come to the park, when there are large numbers of wildlife concentrated in the southern region.

The park has a variety of vegetation: short and long grass open plains in the southeast, acacia savanna in the central area, a hilly and more densely wooded northern section and mountains in the western corridor.

The Serengeti has a number of lodges and camps where you can stay.

Campsites are also available. Activities in the park include walking safaris and ballooning.
