The Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge was established primarily as a sanctuary for migrating and wintering waterfowl. The refuge covers more than 34,000 acres of coastal marsh and prairie bordering East Galveston Bay. Recreational opportunities include wildlife observation (including alligators and migratory birds), photography, fishing, waterfowl hunting, and environmental education and interpretation presentations. The Anahuac refuge is part of the Texas Chenier Plain National Wildlife Refuge Complex, which includes the McFaddin, Texas Point and Moody National wildlife refuges.
