The ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1990 to assist in preserving the nationally significant wildlife and related habitats within the 350,000-acre Ashepoo, Combahee and South Edisto (ACE) rivers basin.

Currently at 11,815 acres, the refuge may encompass 18,000 acres upon completion of additional purchases and consists of two separate units. The Combahee Unit is located near Yemassee and the Edisto Unit is on the old Grove Plantation near Adams Run.

The wetlands habitat of the area has been preserved during the last several centuries through careful management by private landowners. An antebellum mansion that survived the Civil War now serves in part as office space for the refuge.

More than 50 percent of the refuge is tidal marsh and small islands. Fish, birds, crustaceans and other animals inhabit the refuge.

To reach the refuge, from Hwy. 17, take SC 174 (signs will read Edisto Beach and Ernest F. Hollings ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge). Stay on SC 174 through Adams Run (174 will make a right turn in Adams Run). At the intersection with the flashing light, turn right on to Willtown Road. Go approximately two miles, entrance road will be on the left. The refuge office is in the Plantation House approximately two miles down a gravel road.
