The Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge is situated in a glacial basin in northern Colorado. The refuge is a sanctuary for nesting waterfowl. The refuge also attracts marsh, shore and water birds. Porcupine, coyote, beaver, mink, pronghorn antelope, moose and mule deer are also found here. A self-guided, six-mile wildlife auto tour route and a short nature trail both feature interpretive markers. Fishing is permitted in the Illinois River except between June 1 and August 1. The main road to the refuge's headquarters is open year-round, but most access loops and the auto tour loop are closed from November to April. The river is closed to fishing during winter. The refuge has a walking nature trail that is also wheelchair-accessible. Photo credits in order: Photo by Pam R. Johnson, courtesy of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. |
