The Klamath Basin region provides habitat for one of the largest wintering bald eagle populations in the continental United States.

The Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuges are located along the California-Oregon border 24 miles south of Klamath Falls. The six refuges in this complex are the Upper Klamath, Klamath Marsh, Clear Lake, Tule Lake, Bear Valley and Lower Klamath.

During fall migration more than 1 million waterfowl use the combined Lower Klamath and Tule Lake areas.

Lower Klamath hosts the largest concentration of wintering bald eagles in the lower 48 states.

The complex also supports large numbers of white pelicans, cormorants, egrets, grebes, avocets and killdeer.

Klamath Marsh National Wildlife Refuge is an important nesting area for greater sandhill cranes and other waterfowl.
