The Havasu National Wildlife Refuge consists of marshland, parts of the Topock Gorge and the Colorado River, backwater bays, beautiful desert mountains and cliffs. The refuge covers 37,515 acres, of which 17,606 acres are protected wilderness.

The refuge protects 30 river miles, including 300 miles of shoreline from Needles, California, to Lake Havasu City, Arizona. One of the last remaining natural stretches of the lower Colorado River flows through the 20-mile-long Topock Gorge, a site of Indian petroglyphs.

Primary wildlife species protected by the refuge are the endangered Yuma clapper rail and southwestern willow flycatcher, desert bighorn sheep, marsh birds, neotropical birds and a variety of reptiles in the desert uplands.

Visitors should be aware of extremely high summer temperatures and bring plenty of water, a hat and sun protection.
