Wayne National Forest

When many think of Ohio, they picture big cities and industrial areas. But in Wayne National Forest in the hilly region of southeast Ohio, the towns are few and far between.

This region is known as Ohio's Hill Country and has the state's highest hills, steepest ravines and most beautiful rivers and streams.

The forest's three units, Athens, Ironton and Marietta, are distinct geological areas.

Campers and hikers enjoy the sight of rare ferns along the edges of waterfalls and unusual mountain laurels on high ground towering above gorges.

The serious hiker finds challenging terrain and virtual solitude in the forest. The North Country Trail and the statewide Buckeye Trail pass through the forest and intersect with several of the Wayne's finest hiking trails.

There are places to ride horses or off-road vehicles, launch a boat, canoe, fish, camp and picnic. There is a special equestrian camp, and facilities for horses and horse trailers.

The Covered Bridge Scenic Byway leads to covered bridges, tobacco barns and a glimpse of rural crossroads.

Lake Vesuvius offers a boardwalk and boat launch, and there is camping at Oak Hill Campground and Two Points Campground.
