The Apalachicola National Forest, the largest of Florida's three national forests, encompasses 565,000 acres in the Florida panhandle, stretching from Tallahassee westward to the Apalachicola River. Much of the forest is wet lowland with cypress, oaks and magnolias. Slash and longleaf pine interspersed with turkey oak dominate in the upland areas. The abundance of rivers, creeks, lakes, sinkholes and savannahs and two wildernesses, Bradwell Bay and Mud Swamp/New River, provide outstanding recreation opportunities and excellent habitat for plants and animals. Canoeists enjoy established paddling trails on the New, Sopchoppy and lower Ochlockonee rivers. Several lakes have beaches, campgrounds and hiking trails. The Florida National Scenic Trail passes through the forest. Fees are charged at some day use facilities and at camping areas. Hiking trails, horse trails, mountain biking trails and all terrain vehicle trails are available.
