Inside historic Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas National Park.

The Dry Tortugas are a series of seven small islands 68 miles off the coast of Key West. The park includes a wide variety of marine and bird life as well as Fort Jefferson, the largest brick and masonry fortification in the Western Hemisphere.

Snorkeling and scuba diving over colorful coral reefs, swimming, saltwater fishing, underwater photography and touring the historic fort are popular park activities.

This area is an important nesting area for endangered sea turtles. From February to September, a great wildlife spectacle unfolds as 100,000 sooty terns gather on Bush Key to nest. Human access to Bush Key is restricted during this period.

The fort, visitor center and park headquarters are all on Garden Key. Travel to the park is by seaplane or boat. Visitors must bring fuel, water, food and all other supplies and carry out all trash. There is a primitive campground with 10 campsites.
