The stunning beauty of this wilderness attracts all ages.

Stokes is famous for its beauty, from the top of a mountain ridge to the depths of cool and fragrant Tillman Ravine.

Hikers, campers, anglers and photographers are attracted to its wild setting. Trails are open to hikers, horseback riders, mountain bikers and cross-country skiers.

The breathtaking and panoramic view from 1,653 ft Sunrise Mountain along the Appalachian Trail rewards those who have trekked up the steep side of the mountain. The view encompasses pastoral farmland to the east and undeveloped forests and mountain ridges to the west.

For others who don’t wish to climb the mountain and follow a sometimes rocky and steep trail, there is a short drive to the pavilion at the top of the mountain.

Tillman Ravine Natural Area is a cool evergreen forest of eastern hemlock covering the steep slopes carved by the rushing waters of Tillman Brook. Several trails wander through this spectacular ravine, providing views of waterfalls and ferns clinging to rock crevices. The area is home to the barred owl and other endangered species.

Group campsites are open seasonally, but 50 tent and trailer sites with fire rings and picnic tables are open all year. Campsites range from tent and trailer sites to lean-tos. Three cabins are wheelchair-accessible.

The forest preserves nearly 16,000 acres.
