With the Manhattan skyline, Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island providing a spectacular backdrop, Liberty State Park is one of New Jersey’s most dramatic parks. The historic Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal sits prominently at the north end of the park. A two-mile promenade, Liberty Walk, links the picnic area, interpretive center and the railroad terminal while presenting a sweeping view of the Hudson River. A new restaurant and other improvements highlight the northern section of the park, while the western portion is dominated by the state-of-the-art Liberty Science Center. One of the few surviving tidal salt marshes in the Hudson River estuary, the 36-acre Liberty Park Natural Area provides habitat for numerous resident and migratory bird species. A nature trail guides visitors through the area. There are also hiking, biking and fitness trails. Boaters and canoeists enjoy the Hudson River and New York City Harbor. Liberty Landing is a new marina in the early stages of its development. Currently, it offers 200 berths and dockside facilities. Ferry service from Liberty State Park to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island is available year-round. Photo credits in order: Photo by Josh Osowski, courtesy of Liberty State Park. |
