Located 15 miles north and four miles west of Goodrich, the Sheyenne Lake refuge is surrounded by the Lonetree Wildlife Management Area and is managed cooperatively by state and federal officials. The refuge protects Sheyenne Lake, Coal Mine Lake and a marsh. The area has about 300 acres of dense nesting cover, 300 acres of open water and 200 acres of excellent marsh. Fishing is allowed on Coal Mine Lake, except during the waterfowl hunting season when the lake becomes a sanctuary. The refuge is open for wildlife-viewing, photography and hiking. Hunting is prohibited.
