Backpackers make their way through the forest at Burr Oak State Park.

Tucked in the wooded hills and valleys of southeast Ohio, quiet and remote Burr Oak State Park retains a rustic country charm.

As one of Ohio's resort parks, Burr Oak offers a wide array of overnight accommodations, including a lodge, family cottages, and campsites.

The woodlands support a variety of wildlife, including white-tailed deer, ruffed grouse, box turtles and the elusive wild turkey. Burr Oak Lake's shore is inhabited by beaver and various waterfowl.

The hardwood forest is dominated by stately oaks and hickory. In autumn, the forest displays spectacular fall colors as leaves turn to deep reds, brilliant yellows and burnt oranges.

Woodland wildflowers are equally impressive in spring when violets, Dutchman's breeches, trillium, rare orchids, bloodroot and hepatica are in bloom.

A 10-horsepower limit for boats is in effect on the lake, served by four launch ramps. Boat rentals, fuel and seasonal dock rentals are available.

The lake is well known for its largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill saugeye and catfish.

Twenty-eight miles of trails, including a portion of the state's Buckeye Trail, take hikers to scenic vistas and unique rock outcroppings.

Backpackers find the Burr Oak Backpack Trail challenging and enjoyable. This 23-mile loop trail winds around the lake shore and offers primitive campsites and drinking water at several locations along the route. Wildcat Hollow Backpack Trail, located on Morgan County Road 58, is operated by the U.S. Forest Service and can be accessed from the park.

The park has a public swimming beach with bathhouse, showers, and changing booths. Naturalist programs are offered seasonally.

Accommodations and restaurant within the park include the 60-room Burr Oak Lodge and 30 family cabins in the wooded hills.

There are 100 non-electric campsites, numerous primitive sites, and two camper cabins. Pets are permitted on some sites.

A portion of Wayne National Forest and the Sunday Creek Wildlife Area border the park.

State Route 78 between Glouster and McConnelsville earns its nickname "Rim of the World" as one of the most scenic drives in the state.
