Some of New England's most outstanding scenery is found in the White Mountain National Forest.

This sprawling 777,608-acre forest, which extends from New Hampshire into western Maine, features 1,200 miles of hiking trails and 100,000 acres of wilderness. The forest is a mecca for hikers, campers, canoeists, hunters, fly fishers, mountain bikers, downhill and cross-country skiers and snowshoers.

Wildlife includes black bear, moose, great horned owls, peregrine falcons, 70 species of songbirds, bald eagles and a wide assortment of ducks and hawks.

No-trace backcountry camping is permitted under restricted conditions. There are several campsites throughout the forest.

This area is a popular destination during fall foliage season.

There are visitor centers in Conway, N.H., (603-447-5448), Gorham, N.H., (603-466-2713), North Woodstock, N.H. (603-745-3816) and a visitor center in Bethel, Maine, (207-824-2134). The Appalachian Mountain Club Pinkham Notch Visitor Center in New Hampshire also provides information (603-466-2721). There is a fee to park in some forest areas.
