Registered Maine Sea Kayak Guide Course

Whether your focus is personal enrichment or professional development, this course will enhance your ocean leadership and safety skills and help prepare you for the state exam. Registered sea kayak guides will teach you the business of guiding, including safety and risk management. Review paddling strokes and practice reliable rescue techniques during on-water time. Overnight camping at L.L. Bean's Paddling Center on Casco Bay will provide hands-on training in cooking and Leave No Trace® principles.
Itinerary
Your course will cover the broad range of skill and responsibilities required of guides. Experienced instructors will cover the practical aspects of the guiding business, including safety and risk management. You'll learn sea kayak nomenclature, skills, and rescues, practice lost person scenarios and study weather concepts, navigation, and trip planning. Respect for and knowledge of the environment are crucial to good guiding practices and the course will include Leave No Trace® principles and wildlife and nature identification information. And since a good meal and comfortable bed is always important to clients, camping and cooking skills will round out your course. Note: Participation does not guarantee passing the State Guide Exam.
Fee: $495
Prerequisite: Basic first aid and three years of paddling experience is required for Maine state licensing.
