Rated 5 out of 5 Here's the scoop on the raw denim
So I started with this jean in the brown/tan denim version. I liked those jeans a lot, so then I decided to try the raw.
The brown/tan denim stretched a lot. Basically, you want them to just barely fit, and then after a few hours of wearing, they fit perfectly.
Based on others' reviews here, I expected the raw version to fit differently than the brown/tan version...
...I had read that these raw denim are unsanforized. I contacted LLBean and tried to confirm, but the person I talked to didn't seem to understand the difference between sanforization and washing. She said they were "unwashed". Not really the same thing. For those who may not know, sanforization is a process that essentially "preshrinks" the denim.
So once I received them, I measured the jeans out of the box. I had ordered three waist sizes because I didn't know what would fit: 36, 35, 34. The waist measurement on the jeans is about 3" more than the tag size (36 was actually 39, 34 was actually 37). The inseam measured about 1" more than the tag size (I ordered 36" inseam, they actually measured about 37").
So I decided to soak the jeans to see of they shrunk...if they're unsanforized, I figured they would shrink a lot. After soaking, they shrunk about half an inch in length and practically none at the waist.
So I'm thinking these raw jeans are sanforized, otherwise they would have shrunk much more? This is significant to know, if you're into the raw denim thing, and you want your jeans to fit.
So my experience was basically no shrinkage. To be clear on my method of soaking, I soaked them at 80° for ten minutes and then hung to dry.
So basically what I determined is that the raw version of this jean fits exactly the same way as the brown/tan version. I chose to keep the size that fit the tightest out of the box, because I expect them to stretch, and I DONT expect them to shrink once I wash them (which won't be until I've worn them for at least six months).
I'm excited to see how they fade.

I am a big fan of LL Bean jeans, and have been wearing the 1912 style for years. I thought I'd try and diversify my style a bit and get these. The quality is good and fit is true, but they material is like wearing cardboard (even after a couple of washes).

Rated 2 out of 5 by JoetheCritic these are low rise jeans
The description of these jeans could be clearer. The lowered rise means that they are cut to sit well below the navel. It's a good look for teenage girls, less so for middle-aged men. I found the fit quite uncomfortable. Also as others have noted, the sizing is on the generous side.

This is my first pair of raw denim. I got these because I have a pair in black wash (not Raw) and they're the best fitting jeans I've ever had. Also, LL Bean backs their products for life, and I trust this brand. I wanted to try a pair of jeans in Raw to see what all the rage about Raw is, but I didn't want to pay $200+ for a good pair that's made closer to home than China. This pair is made in Mexico and is sturdy. Fit is spot on as expected and they feel very stiff. I'm sure with time they'll develop beautiful creases and wear patterns. From someone who has never owned Raw until now, understand that they will be stiff when you first get them. You might think too stiff, but give them time, let your body oils and your environment work them in for a while before you wash them and then they'll look gorgeous.

Bought two pair of these jeans. They seem to be very well made from a durable denim. I liked the button fly. They were returned, however, because the rise was just too low. If you have even the slightest "belly", the waistband slips under the stomach area, accentuating the tummy... which was quite unflattering.

I bought these for my husband, and they are truly the best fitting jeans he owns...and he LOVES them. I bought the gold and light denim and they hold their color and shape and after washing, and do not sag on the butt (in fact it fits perfectly there! :-) The button fly is not a problem for him, in fact he now prefers it. I wish these were available in black. Please LLBEAN, restock these jeans!!!

These look like great jeans with a good fit at a fair price.
The one big problem for me is the button fly.
Please consider offering the same jeans with a zipper fly.

Rated 3 out of 5 by SingKat Didn't quite fit right
My husband didn't like these because he felt that they were constantly slipping down due to not having a "waist". He had to cinch his belt but it didn't make them fit right like his other jeans. Otherwise, nice denim and wash.
