Rated 4 out of 5 by JayTeeKay I found it true to size? unfortunately.
This review is based on what has been said about sizing here and thought it was worthwhile to add my input. I ordered a large since many were saying this style runs small. I am 6'2", about 170 and would have normally ordered a medium. It turns out I am returning my large and hoping to find a medium somewhere as it is out of stock on here.
I found the large to fit just how I would have expected a large to fit me. While I believe this style is a slimmer design, the size seems very accurate to me.

I wrote a review just the other day about this coat and said that there were several things to note on sizing, but overall I thought it was fine and despite the lack of a full body warm layer/lining it would be fine for DC winters. I was wrong.
The temps dropped early this year and anything below 45 or with a stiff breeze and the coat is cold.
It lacks not only warm lining of any kind, it lacks even basic nylon lining and when the waxed cotton touches your shirt sleeves, it transfers the cold to your arm.
I really, really wanted this coat to work, but sadly, it was returned today.
Dear LL Bean. if you turn the wool vest into a full body removable lining and put even basic nylon lining on the inside (including down the sleeves) I think you would have the perfect coat. But for $225, it's not worth being cold... Great look, just not warm enough.

I took my time deciding to purchase this coat b/c I wasn't sure about it based on previous reviews. It just arrived so let me say this based on my experience so far and some of the other things noted before me:
-The coat has good lines and a good feel to it. I ordered the Loden as it goes with a variety of other clothes/shoes. Classy appearance and clean fit. I like the wax feel to the outer coat.
-Yes, it does run small/straight, so unless you are a very thin build, I say order a size up. I am 5' 10", 220 lbs, with a 45 inch chest, and am glad I got the XL. It fits.
-A light sweater will go underneath, but no, this isn't going to be a coat for 20 below.
-I too wish the vest attached at the point of the armhole. Not annoying it doesn't, but would have been nice. That's one reason I give it 4 stars.
-The other reason I give it 4 stars is that I wish the vest was more of a full torso lining and went down the arms. Personal preference. But for DC winters, it should be fine. Northern locations will likely require something heartier for when it really gets cold as I mentioned earlier. Then again, that is usually the case.
-I haven't gotten it dirty, but I did order the Loden and can see why people would say order a darker color if you can't machine wash or dry clean it.
-Overall the coat is stylish and I think will be a good addition to my wardrobe. I wouldn't recommend you literally take it to the field (more for urban/around town wear), but I think it will do what I need it to when the weather turns colder here. I have only worn it twice, but so far I recommend. Will update if that changes.

Great look and I've been putting it through the paces with it holding up very well. Nice having the removable vest when needed on cooler days. Only fault mentionable is wish it was a tad roomier in the shoulders but only notice this when putting it on. Doesn't seem to be an issue once I'm underway.

This jacket is very much what I expected; L fits a 6'2" 190lb guy just right. Pockets are a bit out of touch for today (great to throw a small duck into) but style is excellent and makes a great outdoor/car coat. Inside vest is detachable and smartly hooks into the shell. I strongly recommend the green as the tan seems to attract dirt and the black, with it's contrasting stitching, demands you be a real lumberjack to make it look good. All in all, a great throwback and it reminds me of something my grandfather would have worn to go duck hunting.

Rated 1 out of 5 by beaninbean a sad imitation of a classic
I bought one of these about 15 years ago and loved it to death. I ordered this as a replacement and was horrified at what I received. The outer jacket feels cheap and the lining is not useful. The original had a full lining that zipped in and the exterior has a nice waxed finish. Additionally, for this collection, Bean dropped its normal size. It went back very quickly

This is the Signature series which runs slimmer so I ordered a size larger. The coat arrived quickly and was exactly what I wanted and had been looking for for some time. The removable vest is excellent for the chillier days and I wear the coat regularly with the vest in and out depending on the weather.
If you are looking for a quality field coat that will last a lifetime, this is it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by BrandonW Slimmer than others, but still large
To compare: I'm 5'9" 140lb and I ordered a small.
The Signature line is certainly slimmer than the main line, however it still feels fairly relaxed. The shoulders could do with being about .2 inches slimmer on both sides, and the arms could probably be shortened by a good half inch (maybe 3/4).
Now onto the feel of this coat...
A nice benefit, which is not mentioned, is that this (as far as I can tell) is waxed cotton. Therefore, this coat is waterproof. It feels a bit odd with a tshirt on though, so perhaps layering is best. The wool vest is pretty thin, but as it creates a double layer with the coat, it does remain warm. I find the vest itself to be nicely fitted, the coat, however, could do with a slimming. A button or two to secure the vest's armholes to the main body would also be useful, as I sometimes have trouble getting the coat on (my arm goes through the vest armhole, but sometimes misses the the coat's armhole since the vest "floats").
This is greener than the image makes it to be (in reality: a very dark green, not brown-ish like the website shows).
pit to pit: 15.5"
Shoulders: 18.5" (+/- half an inch)
sleeve length (seam to seam): 25.5"

Rated 2 out of 5 by Camila how does one clean this coat?!
I love this coat so much but it cannot be cleaned! Like lots of classic wardrobe staples this item works just as well for women as for men. I bought this in dark clay and loved wearing it for my two months with it. Every time i put it on I felt put together (and warm), but this wonderful coat simply cannot be cleaned. The label says no dry cleaning, no hand wash, no machine wash and for all the gentle (and vigorous) spot cleaning I have tried I cannot get out a small amount of dirt so it is going back. What a shame.

Rated 4 out of 5 by lpmpdx Great coat, too baggy
Loved the color, the flannel lining, the softness and obvious durability of the outer material and the classic nature of the design. I even like where the pockets are located, despite other reviews. However, I sent it back because for my tastes, like much of LL Bean's regular line, it was just too baggy. I'm pretty trim (5'10", 170) and most LL Bean medium clothes unless trim fit are just too roomy for me. So, I ordered a Signature version, which has in inner vest and is much less roomy. More expensive, but hopefully worth it. We'll see.
