Fly-Fishing Gear

Hi. I'm Van Blauvelt, a fly-fishing product specialist here at L.L.Bean, and I'm going to talk to you about the gear you'll need to get started fly fishing.

Fly fishing is an excellent way to connect with nature and improve your overall well-being. The rhythmic motions involved in casting a fly can reduce stress while allowing you ample time to peacefully enjoy the great outdoors.

To begin enjoying the benefits of fly fishing, you'll need a fly-fishing outfit. L.L.Bean fly-fishing outfits consist of four main components – a fly rod, fly line, fly reel and leader. You'll then need to select your flies based on the type of fish you're after.

Our experts have put together these outfits so you can be confident you have just the right gear for any situation. They're designed so all the components work together, guaranteeing you a smooth, consistent cast every time.

Waders are a key piece of equipment that will keep you dry and comfortable when you're knee deep in a river or lake. A wading belt is also essential for safety and comes standard on all L.L.Bean waders.

To maximize your comfort and protect yourself from the elements while fly fishing, you'll need a hat, sunglasses, a fishing net and a fishing vest with strategically placed pockets to keep your gear organized and within reach.

Other essential items include a first-aid kit and plenty of water to keep you hydrated during your relaxing day on the river. You'll also want to bring along a waterproof pack to store a water bottle; safety gear; angling gear, like flies; extra tipping and leader material; and forceps for releasing fish, as well as plenty of snacks.

Once you have all your gear, you're ready to begin casting. Sign up for an introductory class from the expert instructors at L.L.Bean Outdoor Discovery, or pick up one of our fly-fishing guidebooks and learn at your own pace.

Want to try fly fishing before you invest in gear? Visit one of our retail stores to sign up for a Walk-On Adventure. For just $20, our experts will teach you the basic skills you need to successfully cast a fly line and present a fly. All the equipment you need is provided.

From complete fly-fishing outfits to expert advice, L.L.Bean has everything you need to get started in this rewarding and relaxing sport. Guaranteed.
