Safety Testing: Kids' Products

Here in our research and testing facility in Freeport, Maine and at select independent labs around the world, we screen products for safety, quality and durability. This is especially important for our kids' products, which undergo rigorous testing to check for everything from wear and tear to flammability. When we're done, you can be confident that L.L.Bean products are not only safe, but are guaranteed to last.

One of the biggest concerns parents have about kids' products is the presence of lead and other harmful substances. At L.L.Bean, we screen for a variety of substances to ensure kids' products meet or exceed federal guidelines.

Our kids' sleepwear complies with federal safety requirements. We work with an independent lab to ensure that only fabrics that meet the strictest federal flammability standards are used to produce kids' sleepwear. To decrease the possibility that small parts could detach from items, our kids' products also undergo a series of mechanical safety tests, including one that checks attachment strength on items from apparel to backpacks.

Features like zippers, snaps and buttons are subjected to weight that is greater than the strength of a child's fingers or teeth, to reduce the risk of a chocking hazard. We also test the soles of kids' footwear, to make sure they provide sufficient traction. We weigh down the shoe or boot and pull it across our test surface, measuring the friction against our safety guidelines.
