Rated 2 out of 5 by anastasia46 Not Warm. Makes a lot of noise
1) This coat is NOT warm.
2) this coat makes a ton of noise when you wear it. it is like wearing a potato chip bag.
3) The coat seems well made and is attractive, but its' noisiness is irritating and it doesn't keep you warm.
4) I had to go up a size. sleeves/shoulders too tight. LLBean customer service was excellent for the exchange.
LL Bean is disappointing. I really thought this coat would be my go to coat. I am keeping it, but only as an occasional coat.

I have mixed feelings about this coat after receiving it in the mail today. the Positives - it's extremely lightweight, even when wrapped in the plastic package it came in. Big plus for me because at 150 lbs and 5 ft 5", size 8 i am an extremely active 49 year old who likes her outerwear to be light, warm and gives the coverage I need when I'm running out of the door for work or taking the train to NYC and Philadelphia on weekends. I'm also very particular about how light a winter/spring/fall outerwear should be after walking or sprinting miles and miles blocks back and forth in the city without overheating. I also like the stowaway hood that is zipped back in the collar.
Cons - the width of the sleeve is tight! Bean - what sized women did you test this on? I got a small because i wanted a trimmer fit but my left arm could not go in even when wearing a t-shirt! A lot of us do not have stick scrawny arms like size 6 models
I am debating whether to exchange this for Medium but since they do not carry these in the store anymore, i may just have to return it and get my money back if the Medium makes me look wider. :(

The coat is very nice and stylish. I wish the hood was more substantial though.

Rated 4 out of 5 by BeachRunner It is a keeper--Zipper problem now
This is a follow-up review. Unfortunately, I have had a zipper problem. I have been wearing my coat numerous times these past couple of days, and the the bottom stop on the zipper has failed. Customer Service was wonderful, and I should have my replacement coat in a few days. I like the coat so much that it is worth a second try.

First, I would like to thank all the reviewers. It helped me make an informed decision. For me, this Commuter Coat is perfect.
It is light weight without the puffy, bulkiness, which is not my style. I am 5' 5" tall and ordered regular small. Love the length and fit. Based on the photos, mine looks like the one without the model.
Our coldest weather has passed, so my review comes during low 40 degree weather. I am new to the Pacific Northwest and have learned to layer my clothing. I have been totally toasty warm and comfortable during my 30 minute walks in the rain with wind blowing wearing a thin base layer and turtleneck. Next winter, I will probably need to add a cable sweater to my layering.
Zipper has been no problem at all. Yes, the zipper is very light weight plastic. Customer Service assured me that I could return the coat if I have a problem. As for the zipper in the hood, I far prefer it over Velcro--just a personal choice. Easy to pull out when the rain hit.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Kmandn Defective or am I crazy?
As a petite girl with a larger chest, I was thrilled to find a weatherproof winter jacket that actually fit. And after reading the reviews I was convinced it would keep me warm too. No such luck. Maybe I got a defective one lacking insulation but I freeze wearing it in weather below 40 degrees. Not a spring jacket but not much warmer. Would not recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by MBACK Warm and comfortable w/o the bulk:)
This was a gift for my daughter who commutes to NYC from CT 3 days a week. She was looking for warm but not bulky. This coat was all that and more. A great fit, sporty and fashionable!

Rated 2 out of 5 by MisaR Wrong choice for me
I've been buying and wearing Bean coats for 30 years and have been completely happy with all my prior purchases. I've recommended Bean outerwear to many people-reliable, durable, well made etc. When I needed a new winter coat last year I ended up trying to choose between this one and the warmer winter coat, even going to a local store to look at and try on both. I chose this one because of how light it is to wear and because the hood zips away unless needed.
This coat is extremely warm and the lightest winter coat I've ever worn. But Bean, you really screwed up with the zippers on this one. The main zipper is too lightweight-it constantly gets caught in the lining and jams. It's also very difficult to get the zipper started properly so it stays zipped. I thought this was just something I'd adapt to but I still have trouble in my second winter with it.
The other problem I have is with the zip away hood. My old Bean coat had the tucked away hood but it was secured with Velcro. I have several beautiful hand knit scarves I use . This zipper totally ruined one. I tried unzipping the enclosure, leaving the hood out, but the zipper still messes up my scarf. So I can't wear my scarves with it.
I will probably purchase another coat for next winter. SO disappointing.

Coat is very waterproof and warmth ist good, but too tight and the zipper is not sturdy enough.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Shopaholic0705 Great Coat!
I really like this coat. I commute to work by public transit and this coat is perfect for that (not too bulky). Not quite as warm as I was expecting, so I layer it. Even with layering it's not bulky. No problems with the zipper yet. The other great thing is that it's really light weight and you could easily fit in a suitcase for travel.
I only give it 4 stars because it's not as warm as I would have liked, but overall, it's a really good buy.
