Rated 3 out of 5áby JerseyPackRat not as great as it seemed
Functional, traditional, spacious, versatile.. it is all of those things, but...After a two week trip:
- The leather strap stitching has started to fray after only a couple of days;
- The traditional buckles do take a bit more time to operate, and there is no fast access pocket. So if you need to frequently open and close the bag, the buckles become a bit of a chore;
- The nylon webbing at the back and the underside of the strap tops is dense and heavy, and kind of takes away from the old school look of the rucksack. I also got pretty warm along my back, where the webbing sat on a t-shirt, and the temperature was only a cool 65F. Personally, I would've liked a more traditional canvas/leather padded back and straps.

Rated 2 out of 5áby commuterbybike great looks, so-so practicality
This old-school backpack looks terrific, but its retro styling has drawbacks. The thick leather bottom and the metal buckles and loops make the pack seem heavy even when it's empty. If you're always in a hurry, this pack may slow you down: The traditional buckles take more time to fasten and unfasten than modern plastic buckles that open and close with a snap. The waist belt is awkward: Instead of a regular buckle, it has two metal loops and one leather loop that are hard to thread. On a hot day, I wore the pack while wearing light clothes, and the leather lower part stained my clothing. The waxed canvas does repel water, but it is by no means waterproof. I wore the pack in the rain, and after about 15 minutes, some water started leaking through. I wouldn't trust it to keep my things dry for an extended period in a torrential downpour. On the plus side, the pack is sturdy, has plenty of convenient pockets, and can hold a lot of stuff, but I'm debating whether to return it.

Rated 5 out of 5áby Ronaldearl Heritage Rucksack
Having purchased several "back packs" over the last several years I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and usefulness of this one. Without a doubt it has exceeded my expectations and that is hard to do in these times of cheap knock off products. Thanks L. L. Bean you still have it.

Rated 5 out of 5áby tharrington Awsome Rucksack
I am a NYS Track and Field Official and was looking for a new type of "bag" to put my gear in for Track and Field meets. Nothing I found had enough durable compartments or room to put my clip board, timing equipment, flags, 6" level for High Jump, bottles of water, rules book, pencils, runway markers, official Pole Vault forms, sunscreen, hat etc until I just happened to walk into a LL Bean outlet store and picked up this Rucksack. There "IT" was, a bag that was well made, durable, had functionality, had compartments that would zip shut with durable zippers and was waterproof. Just an awesome product from a company that has an outstanding warranty and high quality standards. I would recommend this to anyone for any purpose.

Rated 5 out of 5áby Bobsled05 Replacement Heritage Waxed Canvas Rucksack
Hi, I just ordered a new Heritage Waxed Canvas Continental Rucksack to replace the my current Heritage Waxed Canvas Continental Rucksack. I have carried it with me almost everyday for the last 9+ years (actually forgot the exact date I bought it). I am still using it daily for work, I work with the Department of Defense as a civilian and as such have literally been around the world with it. It has held up to rain, snow and heat. It has carried my computer for work and my personal computer together! Don't forget all the cables for both computers as well. It has carried important documents depending where I was going, I swear some times it was really loaded and did not think it would hold but made it home every time. About a year ago I notice a slight tear on the left strap area inside the pack. It has gotten worse but still I use it , the two rivets are doing their part! When the new one comes in I plan to take to a shoe repair shop to see if it is repairable. I highly recommend this rucksack to anyone who is looking for durability. This one holds up, also I can't count or remember how comments I get with this rucksack. I highly recommend this rucksack.

áby Timbro Perfect Size and excellent durability
After too many experiences with rucksacks made of weak materials I decided to take a chance on this product. I was hoping that with the materials used for construction coupled with the famous Bean guarantee, I would finally have a rucksack that would last me for more than a year and would have just enough compartments to meet my needs. I also wanted something that looked great although my focus was on functionality and durability first. I just use this for a daily work rucksack to carry lunch, my work boots, and a few other small items so I'm not placing a high demand on it. I didn't need 20 small compartments fastened with Velcro either. I just wanted a functional and durable platform and that is exactly what this is. It is well constructed. Both canvas and leather portions seem to be of good durable quality. The main compartment has a draw string and the front smaller compartment has a heavy duty zipper so if you don't want to hassle with buckling in the leather straps, your contents can still be relatively secure.
I have been carrying this for about a month now and grow to love it more each day. I have had it in the rain a couple of times. The waxed canvas sheds water easily and my contents have stayed dry. If I were going to subject it to extended wet weather, I would probably treat the leather right away as it soaks in the moister rather quickly.
I have received numerous compliments on the looks and it seems to remind everyone of the tents they camped in as a kid.
Overall, my experience has been very positive and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.

This pack was exactly what I was looking for. I use it for family day trips hiking or sledding and also as my carry on for travel. I can fit anything I need plus more if necessary for these kinds of outings and trips.
The pack displaces the weight of what I carry, making the outing that much more enjoyable. Plus, the venting helps keep me from getting soaked while wearing the pack for long periods of time.
There might be more functional rucksacks out there for the "hardcore" hikers, but this pack is more than just that. It works well and looks great for all types of situations. I love how it has performed for me, and the vintage look is a plus. Exactly what I wanted and worth every penny.
Loving LL Bean and their products...

Rated 5 out of 5áby Whippetlady GREAT RUCKSACK
This is a terrific rucksak and extremely well made. Unfortunately I had to return it as it was too big for me and I was going to use
it in place of a tote bag for work.
Great for traveling.

Rated 4 out of 5áby UrbanHiker2015 Pretty Darn Good
This is a nice bag. Don't get me wrong. It is spacious, mostly well made, and seemingly durable.
-This is an update of their heritage rucksack with the faux white shearling, which now has an internal dedicated pocket for a large laptop and/or tablet as well. The original did not. I bought this bag, because it met almost all of my current needs.
-It has side pockets large enough for water bottles (swell bottles are what I am currently using)
-large enough to put my tech gear along with my papers and loads extra.
-While I understand that the concept of a rucksack is so you can just dump stuff inside; this bag would have benefitted by having one or two additional internal pockets for a small field notebook, pencil, compass, or anything other than the laptop holder. While there are large pockets in the flip top, as well as the bottom bag; extra organization for such a large bag is necessary.
-No chest straps. This is a huge problem for me, as the more you load the bag the more it sags and doesn't look quite right. It also sits funny if it gets heavy and becomes fairly unwieldy (although is mostly comfortable). I bought separate chest straps, and am much happier I did so.
Overall, I'd say this is a pretty cool bag. Just wish it had a few more extras.

Rated 5 out of 5áby clintn Already feels like an old friend...
When I removed the rucksack from the packaging the smell of what the outdoors used to smell like came back to me. When I was a kid, we had canvas tents, canvas packs, everywhere reinforced with leather. So, straightaway, I felt that I was welcoming an old friend home.
I lost both of my legs so I'm in a wheelchair. Nothing wrong with my old pack, really, but it's ugly - same old black ballistic nylon that you see everywhere - and it has more gizmo pockets on it than I have ever used. The Continental Rucksack has character and it has a wonderful design so that you're able to find a spot for everything without having to unzip three zippers and fumble through two pockets just to find your house keys.
I am absolutely delighted with this rucksack. I looked at quite a few before I ordered this one and I'm very happy with my choice.
