Rated 5 out of 5 by Mountainbikerboy The Mariner keeps me roll'n!
Im a middle class kinda guy in recovery! That means Ive had to start over again, learning how to live life! My funds are on a fixed basis!
I don't have a car; I found, riding bikes saves gas and keeps me in shape and allows me to see the great outdoors; I use bikes!
Ive been riding for 15 years! However, although Ive owned Mountain bikes worth several thousand dollars! One area of bicycling has out maneuvered me; the ability to lock up a bike and keep it from being stolen! Ive lost several bikes over the years! After much investigation and time; to my shock! The problem is; I never locked the bikes that were stolen! I literally handed them to any thief that walked by because I forgot to lock them! I meant to lock them! Yet, after locking bikes a million times; I became absentminded! I thought I locked the bike! But I didn't! And when I came back from the meeting or the Gym or the store; the bike was gone! Recently, this happened again! And I realized! Mountain biking is for the mountains! I needed a bike for commuting in the city! Yet, How could I keep a bike from getting stolen if I had to lock it outdoors where I couldn't keep an eye on it ! With a bit of online curiosity! I ran across folding bikes! And Dahon had the best reputation! The Mariner being one of the highest rated bikes! And I realized; the reason Dahon bikes were never getting stolen; they were always inside in eye view with the owner! Im not suggesting one cant lock these bikes! But the reason bikes get stolen; they are outside where thieves are watching!
My Mariner D7 arrived!
Today, I received my bike in good solid packaging from LLBean! It took no time to put the bike together! It's a solid sharp looking bicycle with specific purpose and intent to get you on the road to your destination! The fenders are a nice touch! And I love the rack in the back! Brakes are solid and strong! This bike weighs 27 pounds!
And of I Road!
It peddles a bit harder then a traditional bike and your seated upright, much like your in the Gym on a stationary bike! The Mariner has 7 speeds; and I need them for my longer rides! First outing, its off to the Chinese Restaurant!
On the road; My streets are a bit bouncy and bumpy; The Mariner handled it with no problems; This is a commuter bike; not a mountain bike! Im not spiking up and over curbs with this machine! This is for city use! It can be ridden on smooth dirt trails! Its fast enough with 7 speeds!
This bike handles well on the street and the shape of the frame makes it easy to step off the bike when crossing at a cross walk!
Im at the Chinese Restaurant; In the parking lot; First I unlatched the lever that holds the frame! Much harder then one would expect to undo! There is a technique for this! It takes time! Then the handle bars and peddles fold down or inward! The bike folds in two, sucked together by magnates; works great!
I walked in the Restaurant with my folded bike in hand! It was strange! Would they really let me in with a bicycle; even a folded one! Yes,! They never said a word! To the restaurant, its just a piece of luggage! They didn't notice! And, I put this folding bike under my table with my coat and gloves! Finally, when finished with dinner: I grabbed my folding bike and walked outside! It took no time in latching it together and I was off! I had to adjust the angle of the handle bar! Aligning it with the front tire! I did this! And headed home!
Final conclusion; Peace of Mind! it was a great feeling, having my bike under the table with me! not locked up outside where I could not see it!
Specifically; this bike worked as designed! I used it as a solid commuter bike that can be folded down quickly and easily, taken inside a building! then brought back out to the street, unfolded quickly, and rid'n away as a solid form of transportation!
In addition! ive asked stores and other establishments if i can bring this bike inside; yes! I don't always have to fold it up! its brought a different view of my city biking experience! a more secure experience! Im grateful I have a quality bicycle I can take indoors! Now, I can ride the mountain bikes in the Mountains! and the commuter bikes in the city without worrying they will be stolen!
Thank you Dahon for a very nice bike! and Thank you again LLbean for a wonderful online buying experience!
