Boots where great right off the bat! I received these boots about a year ago. First: the boots do not have a particularly high arch in them which is great for my flat feet. This is an easy fix for people that do need a higher arch as LL Bean does sell Superfeet. The boots do run warm especially when hiking in the summer time. But the Gor-Tex membrane does make them comfortable and wicks the moisture very quickly. The boots also are rather tall. Me personally I do not mind, as this makes me feel like I can use these boots anywhere for anything, hiking, shooting, casual wear I always feel prepared (I guess this is the reason some special forces operators wear a version of these boots). Now for all of the other great things, the boots are amazingly waterproof score 1 for Gor-Tex..again. the boots are also extremely comfortable as I said I can wear these for anything. To me they feel as if a pillow is protecting my feet!
One little thing is the tounge to the boots scrunch up once they are laced they do not lay flat against the leg, not a huge problem, but that is something I would like to be changed.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Worrior Ok boots but heavy
I found the 4D ll GTX to be a heavy, hot, thick soled boot "rather stiff".
They have excellent support and traction through mud and rocks but not so much on steep inclines due to there thick stiffness
My pair wern't out of the box comfortable,They took several miles of trail (unfortunatly) to become wearable.
I purchaced the DX Hiker to replace my Keen Targhee (big mistake)

Rated 4 out of 5 by BTBeanReviewer Solid Boot
I purchased this boot based on past reviews and decided to buy one to replace my Merrells. Upon examination, this boot seems to be well-made and a rugged boot. When I tried it at the store, it does have good ankle support and feels a little stiff but I bought it anyway since LL Bean have a great Customer Satisfaction policy. I decided to wear it around the inside of my house figuring it probably needs a little break-in period to soften it up. By the second day of wearing and walking inside my house, the boot has soften up and feels much better which now seems conformed to my feet.
This review is based on my first initial impression, however, this does not give an actual true feedback since it has not been worn over an extended time period. I will have to do a follow-up after at least a minimum 6+ months of wear to provide an overall performance of this boot. To try the boot on at the retail store and not giving it sufficient time of wear and then to give it a high rating would be insufficient information for the future buyers who may be interested in purchasing this boot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Chickbud Most comfortable boots I ever owned
I have trouble finding boots/shoes that do not irritate my very sensitive hammered toes. These I can wear all day, be on my feet and they still feel better on than off at the end of a 14 hour work day.

This is the first pair of boots in my 51 years on the planet that I've actually worn the soles down. I bought them two years ago thinking I would use them in the fall and winter in upstate ny. They are so comfortable that I've worn them almost exclusively since I got them. I'm on my feet all day doing construction work and I don't baby my footwear even a little. You will not regret spending the extra money on these...your feet deserve it
