Rated 5 out of 5 by 49er Not your usual "soft-shell"
This jacket is almost windbreaker weight. It is pliable and comfortable. The all-black is sophisticated enough for city-wear. I purposely bought up a size to be able to wear layers. The larger size does not look too big due to the soft shoulder styling. I am SO please that it is not the narrow-sleeved, tight armpit, and restrictive shoulder fit found in previous jackets (all of which had to be returned). One can definitely move in this jacket, and not get overheated. For a jacket intended for active wear, you need freedom to move. When zipped up, the zipper bulges out some, but it may be due to the windproof zipper design. Finally, after long last, a keeper!

Rated 5 out of 5 by LovellbeanMucho The perfect jacket
When my old pathfinder soft shell jacket finally fell apart, I bought another. But they changed the design for the worse. Too fitted in the body, odd sleeve cuffs. So I tried this Ascent soft shell -- on sale to boot. Amazing jacket. It is lighter, more stretchy than the pathfinder. It also does not have that soft fleece feel on the inside. But I love it. It is easier to layer, has a great fit and is amazingly flexible in terms of regulating temperature. On the one hand, wearing it around on the house, one does not get too warm. But walking outside to the corner on a windy, wintry day -- the jacket keeps you warm. Don't know how it manages to keep you comfortable in such a range but it does. Feel like buying two of them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by sixoakfarm Only my running jacket, not!
I chose this to be my special running jacket. I live in the Texas Panhandle where the wind speed is often more critical than the temperature or precipitation. And it was to be only my running jacket.
We live on a small horse farm and getting grimy with green kisses and barn chores are a daily occurrence. From day two in windy weather this went from my running to running and riding to ok everything. I am comfortable in all temperatures and the wind never touches me on the inside of the jacket.
Before I head out for my daily run, the horse treats come out of the pockets. Recently I rode my white and brown horse during a blowing snow storm. With the bright red color I was readily visible and comfortable as we were camouflaged by the surroundings. It will be my go to gift for my adult girls 2015 Christmas.

Rated 4 out of 5 by NMoutdoorlover Love it
I am very surprised at how well this jacket stops the wind. I know there are reviews out there that says it doesn't...but I find it is awesome. I live in the windy part of NM...what part of NM isn't windy. lol But on a windy cold day, with a couple of layers, this jacket stops the wind in its tracks. I am amazed..I have not found anything like it. I only wish it was longer and had longer back to it. Also, I would love to have pants made out of the same materials. Walking my dogs, snowshoeing, skiing, just being out and about, we come across wind and I don't feel it. Again, amazed, I never thought it was possible. Make pants just like this jacket! The reason why I give it a 4 vs. a 5 is it needs to be longer. It fits well, I ordered a large and wear a 10-12 and I can layer appropriately as well as layer it under jackets when its really cold. Perfect for all my sports.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Longtime Too much "breathe", not enough "windstop"
This jacket is a big disappointment. I will be returning it next week. Note: I buy lots of LLBean clothing and wear them all the time. I bought this jacket to wear beach walking and/or horseback riding at temperatures in the high 40s and low 50s. In two uses this past week, this windstopper jacket did not keep me warm.
Test 1 Riding. Temperature 43, wind at 9 mph, gusting to 25. Layers underneath: mid-weight thermal zip top turtle and fitness fleece. I was so cold I had to change jackets. No way to use it in active grooming or riding my horse. An older, windblock Bean fleece jacket worked just fine.
Test 2 on the Beach. Temperature 55, wind at a light breeze 5-10 mph. Layers underneath: long-sleeve silk top, and fitness fleece. My back was always cold walking at a good pace.
Bottom line: If the temperature is below 60, and there is more than 5 mph wind, the jacket will not keep you warm.
Yes, the fit is nice, but if it does not do its job .. fit doesn't matter.

I bought this jacket for a biking trip in Italy. I wanted something more versatile than biking gear yet wanted wind and rain protection - and visibility. And was I glad I bought it! I rode through a very strong downpour with wind, and the jacket not only kept me perfectly dry but it also breathed, unlike a regular rain jacket. Plus, the sleeves are a bit long which is great as you can protect your hands. I'm 5'3", 118 #'s, and the small fits me perfectly. And looks good too! I got the red for good visibility. The only improvement I could suggest would be a hood. It is one of my best Bean purchases this year, and trust me, there have been many!

Rated 5 out of 5 by LIRed Did I need another jacket? No.
But I bought this anyway, on the Daily Special, and love it. When it arrived and I tried it on, it fit perfectly and the cut looked fabulous. I knew it was a keeper. I'm 5'3" at 138lbs and got the medium. I didn't have the nerve to get a color, so got the black, thinking it was more versatile.
I am a regular golfer and it is now October in NY and getting cooler. Yesterday was cold and very windy. I layered underneath and did not feel stuffed. I have 'golf' jackets not as comfortable and flexible as this one. Also, after being rolled up in my golf bag on another day, it emerged not wrinkled.
Thanks LLBean for a great product.

Rated 2 out of 5 by TCM1 Nice fit, but didn't do it's job.
I got this jacket for windy spring/summer/fall days when the temperature wasn't going to be particularly low, so I was not expecting any real insulating capabilities. However, I was expecting it to be windproof as labeled. The one that I bought lets wind straight through the fabric. I'm not sure if I got a dud, but it was really disappointing.
I threw in an extra star because the fit is fantastic - LL Bean did a great job with the cut. Usually sleeves are too short for me but this one was perfect. Also didn't have a flare of extra fabric at the hips. Two thumbs up on this part.

Rated 5 out of 5 by SunriseOnTheLake great fit!
I am very satisfied with this jacket. It's lightweight and has a flattering fit. It's roomy enough to wear a sweatshirt under it. I'm only 5'0" and usually have a problem with the sleeves being too long, but this Petite jacket fit me just fine. I would definitely recommend it.

I have only had this jacket a couple weeks and it is already my favorite for golf, hiking and around town. I ordered a petite extra small - I am 5' tall and 115 lbs. Fits perfect with a fleece layer underneath. Definitely stops wind. I have not tried it in the rain yet.
