This is a great bag. Durable, casual but not ugly, capacious. It does not meet my needs. I am a 5' 8" woman and, unlike other reviewers, I was okay with the long shoulder strap. I do however object to the wide flat, leather handles, which hurt my female sized hands. It is very heavy. I really wanted to keep it, because it holds a laptop, iPad, files, and wallet/tissues/brush #purse contents# so would have been perfect for air travel. I found that, so loaded, it was too painful to carry using the handles. Nevertheless, it is a good product and I wish it were right for me.
I bought the smaller canvas bag, thinking it might alleviate the handle problem, but it was too narrow to hold much more than laptop and iPad. If only LL Bean could merge the two and replace the flat handles with rounded handles!

Rated 2 out of 5 by NorthNJ Weighs too much & has stiff handles
This tote weighs more than twice as much as the L.L. Bean tote of similar size that I own or the L.L. Bean medium boat tote or a large leather tote made by another company. Additionally the handles are quite stiff and will not be nearly as comfortable for carrying weight as the leather handles on the boat tote or on their other leather-handled totes.
On the positive side, it looks extremely sturdy, and the compartments are well placed and look quite useful.
I am returning it because I do not want to feel when I start the day with an empty bag that I am already carrying a suitcase, and I do not want to deal with the edges of the handles digging into my hand. Rounded handles are a great idea, and L.L. Bean has been using them for years. I have to wonder why they did not use them on this tote.

Rated 5 out of 5 by VermontBear Sturdy, useful, beautiful
This is a great tote bag, on the pricey side but worth it. The quality of the canvas, leather, workmanship, and Bean's customer service means I'll be lugging this around for years, if not decades, to come. What it's good for: lugging books and files and laptop and iPad to the library or cafe, books and lunch and extra sweater to work, grocery shopping, easy-access carry on for air travel, and large enough to pack for a day trip. (One complaint: adjusting shoulder strap to shortest length is still pretty long, but it's a slight annoyance). It's better than the iconic Bean tote because it has more pockets and a shoulder strap, it's better than the hunter's tote because it looks more beautiful and is appropriate to bring to the office. It's a tote bag, carry-on, gym bag, messenger bag, all in one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by BarefootInTheCity Great but shoulder strap is too long
I have been pining for a great bag that can carry work items (to meetings as well as construction site visits) as well as a weekend's worth of clothes. I love the timeless look and durable quality and this bag fits the bill for so many reasons. It is a little larger than I'd like, but still I hope to have it for years to come.
My biggest issue with the bag is that the over the shoulder strap is meant for like a 7'-0" tall man... I'm 5'-8" and the shortest length of the strap makes for a very uncomfortable walk, with the bag hitting my legs with every step. Maybe I can get the strap tailored so that it sits in the middle of my back, but otherwise the bag is great - I mostly just detach the long strap and carry the bag by the handles.
