Rated 5 out of 5 by Fellini Very Practical Travel Jacket
As a humanitarian relief worker, this LLBean Explorer jacket has accompanied me nearly everywhere I've traveled?from Pakistan to Sudan to Peru. The coat is lightweight and very packable. It has a plethora of pockets including two inside zippered pockets perfect for keeping a passport, tickets and cash secure. With a sweater or fleece, it works well throughout most of the year anywhere I've gone. I've looked at other similar jackets but find that they typically have fewer practical features than the LL Bean Explorer Jacket and usually cost much more. As my last Explorer Jacket, well-used for over a decade, is starting to fray, I'm glad I've been able to replace it with the latest version. About the only change I can detect is that version I bought 10+ years ago was at least one size oversized. So while I typically wear a large, the medium had fit fine. In the current version, the sizing is not oversized and I had to return the medium I had ordered and get the large jacket instead.

Rated 2 out of 5 by stargeezer The previous version was much better.
I had the previous model of the explorer's jacket (with no hood) and loved it. Wore it nearly every day for 3 seasons for many years. My favorite jacket. Was disappointed when this version came without a choice of no tucked-in hood but ordered it anyhow. This new version is styled differently (though it looks identical to previous one on the web site). As others have noted the hand warmer pockets are too small to be comfortable. The material is a bit heavier and overall well made but the rolled and stuffed hood is not comfortable. PLEASE bring back the old model.

First, when I opened the package, I found the jacket to be a wrinkled mess. It was obvious that it would need to be ironed before it could be worn. Even a casual, outdoorsy jacket should look neat.
The next thing that hit me was the incredible stink. It smelled like it had been stored in a building where there'd been a fire. The smell literally filled the room. After just trying it on, my clothes took on the same odor. I hung it outside on the back porch to air it out. After two weeks outside, it is still too smelly to wear. Now I'm debating whether to wash it or just send it back.
The collar is cockeyed because it is tightly overstuffed with the hood. I can't seem to straighten it out. I know if I pull the hood out, I would never get it back in. Another dilemma.
The idea of the coat is terrific. The reality is less than desirable.

Rated 3 out of 5 by MidLifeCrises Sturdily Built, But....
Quality material and build. However,
I found the pockets to be notably small, especially the exterior hand pockets. I have relatively small hands, but they're too big for these pockets. They seem more appropriate for a pre-teen child.
Also found the arm length to be too short.
The jacket is sized relatively snug overall. If you're looking for a generous cut, you may want to consider one size up. Won't work for me because the shoulders are too broad in larger size.
Returning for a refund.

I was pretty excited to get a spring/fall jacket with lots of pockets, liked the looks but disappointed to find out it is on the small side-usually a XXL gives lots of room for layering, but beyond a long sleeve shirt this jacket does not allow for that. The pockets are small, the handwarmer pockets are too small fo fit my hands into and the hideaway hood collar is bulky and uncomfortable. I am usually quite satisfied with llbean, but not this time.

Rated 3 out of 5 by notquiteok Design flaw / recommendation with reservation
I bought this jacket for future overseas travel but find the design lacking. The jacket is of sturdy construction and heavyweight material. The problem is the pockets. They are 'TOO' small. for actual storage. The exterior front unsnapped pockets for keeping your hands warm will only do so if you are a child. The interior pockets are also very small. Forget storing an iPad or similar device.
The waterproofing compound on the jacket also emits a very strong chemical odor. I've 'aired ' mine for several days and it still smells. I would have expected not to have these issues for a $150 jacket. I'll keep mine as I have not been able to find another which includes a hood and some pockets.
